Riding in a group

You may have extensive experience in group riding, or you may be new to it all.

The following information is for all levels of knowledge and experience. Primarily we will focus on:
– Riding in staggered file

– 2nd rider drop or or corner marker

These will be encountered on every MCMS group ride.

Each group ride will have a designated ride leader. The ride leader will give a brief for the days activities. Let the lead rider know you are there and ready to go, suggested check list:
– Fuel (Actually more mandatory than suggested)
– Air
– Oil
– Chain
– Coffee
– Toilet

There will be a “Riders name sheet” . Be sure to add your name and details onto the sheet.

There will also be a “Tail end Charlie” (TEC) at each ride. If you are not familiar, the TEC will always be the last rider in the group. Sometimes the group will stretch out such that some will lose sight of the lead rider. The TEC is there to help keep everyone pointed in the right direction, help anyone who is having issues with their bike, and to let the ride leader know if there has been a breakdown.

In general, while riding within the group, it is helpful to never pass the lead rider and always stay in front of the TEC.

If for any reason you choose to leave the ride part way through, do not speed up to wave off with the lead rider, pull over wait for the TEC and wave off from there.

The TEC can then update the lead rider for you.

Riding in staggered formation

Riding in a staggered formation:

involves forming a zig-zag pattern where each rider is positioned on opposite sides of the lane to create space between motorcycles, which allows for better visibility and reaction time.

The lead rider takes one side of the lane (e.g., the right third), while the next rider takes the opposite side of the same lane (e.g., the left third), and this pattern repeats down the line.

This formation is ideal for straight roads, but riders should switch to a single-file formation for corners, curves, or in other hazardous conditions.

Key principles of staggered formation:
• Safety and reaction time: The staggered pattern increases the space between motorcycles, giving each rider more time and room to react to hazards, sudden stops, or changes in speed.

• Visibility: This formation provides each rider with a clear view of the road ahead and the ability to move from side to side if necessary.

• Lane positioning: The lead rider positions themselves in one third of the lane, and the next rider positions themselves in the opposite third, maintaining a two-second gap on straight roads.

• Cornering: When cornering, all riders should switch to a single-file formation and follow their own line through the turn to ensure safety and space.

• Adjustments: Riders should adjust their position to maintain the staggered pattern, but they should not ride side-by-side, as this significantly increases the risk of collision.

2nd rider drop off system

The “2nd rider drop off” is a motorcycle group riding tactic where the second rider in line stays at a junction to mark the turn, while the rest of the group passes by.

The second rider, waits for the last group rider in the group to pass before rejoining the back of the formation. They join in front of the “TEC” rider.

This system ensures the group doesn’t get lost by marking the route and allows for rotation, so no single rider is always at the back.

How it works:
Group formation: The group rides with a leader at the front and the TEC right behind them at the back of the group.

At a junction: When the group approaches a turn, the leader signals for the second rider to drop off safely at the junction.

Marking the way: The second rider stops in a safe position to mark the turn. They can do this by making a hand signal for the group to continue or by pulling to the side of the road.

Waiting for the group: The second rider waits for the entire rest of the group to pass, except the TEC, ensuring all riders have seen the turn.

Rejoining: Once the last rider has passed, the now former second rider rejoins the back of the group in front of the TEC.
